Our approach

From the classroom to the track

The team gathered around its car in the Silverstone pit lane, French flag raised

A team of student volunteers, run like a company.

The EIGSI Formula Team was founded by students with a passion for cars. All the work is done on a voluntary basis. This commitment lets them live their passion and train, in real conditions, for the job they want to build a career in.

We work like a company. The design office designs the car in 3D, simulation checks every choice before manufacturing, then a production line makes the parts. At every step, the Cost Report member of each department records everything done on that department's parts: design, simulation, manufacturing. The principle stays simple: whoever designs it builds it.

What we are aiming for this season

This season's goal is to run the car as much as possible. Running means gaining experience: checking that our simulations are close to reality, finding the parts that need to be more reliable and seeing where to gain performance. The technical details of the #17 are on the car page.

The team

More than eighty students, seven technical departments

Powertrain, suspension, chassis, integration, on-board electronics, simulation, aerodynamics: each department carries part of the car, from the first sketch to the fitted part. The Competition Performance department prepares the car for the track.

Alongside the technical departments, the Communication and Management team keeps the association going: partnerships, media and organising team life.

Separately from the team's organisation, the competition scores three static events at Silverstone: the Design Presentation, Cost & Manufacturing and the Business Plan. They count in the rankings just as much as track performance.

The car

A single-seater designed part by part

Almost everything is designed, calculated and built by the team: the chassis, the suspension, the wiring harness and the safety systems. When a part is bought off the shelf, it is because we have no other option, and we always justify why that part suits our car. Every choice is then defended before a jury of engineers. The exploded view opposite shows the complete assembly.

The competition

What is Formula Student?

The world's biggest student engineering competition. University teams design, build and enter a single-seater, judged as much on its design, cost and business model as on its track performance. Before it can run, the car has to pass full technical inspection: scrutineering.

Why a technical inspection? Because a car built by students must first be safe, for the driver as for everyone else. Scrutineers check more than 150 rules. Until the car has passed everything, it is not allowed to run.

It is not easy: it takes place in six successive checks. A car that fails fixes its fault, then queues up again. In 2026, out of 64 cars, only 29 passed all the mechanical checks up to braking. The six checks are detailed on the competition page.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know

The questions we are asked most often about the team, the competition and how to support us.

When and where does the team meet?

The team meets at EIGSI, in the evenings and at weekends; the technical department works in the school workshop. A coordination meeting takes place every Monday, and a plenary meeting every month. Allow around thirty hours a month per student. The project is extracurricular: this time is taken outside classes, in everyone's own time.

Do you need prior knowledge to join the team?

Not when you arrive. Newcomers in their first year first join the Concept Class: they work there on their own single-seater concept, mentored by senior members. They then move to the technical team, in the Formula Student class, to design and build the competition car. Within the technical team, the Embedded systems and Simulation departments also take on people who still need training; the others expect skills already in place.

How often do you race?

One competition a year: Formula Student UK, at Silverstone. The 2027 season targets all four dynamic events: Skidpad, Acceleration, Autocross and Endurance. For now, our limited budget only allows us to race at Silverstone. But we are open to other competitions, such as Formula Student Spain, if our budget allows.

How can I follow the project?

On LinkedIn and Instagram for progress through the season, and through the newsletter we send our partners at every key stage.

Support us

Put your know-how on a racing car

A skill, a machine, software, a material or a logistics resource are worth as much to the team as financial support. We document what each contribution made possible: the part produced, the test carried out, the trip funded.
